Learning to Drive
You dont need to pass your theory test before starting lessons but you will need a provisional driving licence.
How many hours you will need is dependent on your level of ability and how soon you can drive up to test standard without my help.
We take things at your own pace and keeping your confidence intact is my priority, with support and patience. When you are comfortable on quiet roads we move onto busier ones and so on.
Unlike many instructors I spend the minimum amount of time at the side of the road talking about what we are going to do. Driving is what you came for and that's what we will do.
My 7 years' experience has proved it is best to release only information that you need to concentrate on. This way you will be more focused with a clear head and learn quicker with me talking and guiding you through each stage.
When you reach the required standard we will be doing at least one Mock test. They are very important preparation for your driving test helping to calm nerves and giving an insight into what to expect on test day. They are an essential guide to your level of driving and show what you can do without help so we can go on and fine tune for test.

The Driving Instructor
My name is Pete Richmond, with seven very successful years experience as an Approved Driving Instructor registered with the Driving Standards Agency, green badge displayed in my windscreen. Beware of instructors with pink badges, they are trainees with very little experience often offering cut price lessons.
Driving instruction is not just a job for me, I enjoy teaching to drive and take great pride with very thorough professionalism.
Unlike most instructors 90% of my pupils ask me to sit in the back of the car on their test to observe. This reflects a good relationship, good communication and trust, proving my pupils feel comfortable in the car with me, and makes me a better instructor as I know what examiners are looking for.
My pass rate is among the highest in Derby, and I challenge any instructor in Derby to beat my 1st time pass rate which is 80% of all my pupils for 2007, including 9 passes in a row.
I have a laid back approach to instruction, keeping calm in all situations, but teach in a comfident positive manner, many nervous pupils have gone on to pass 1st time with me. My pass rate January to June 2007 was 83%; average pass rate at Derby test centre is aound 43%.
Making mistakes is part of learning to to drive and you will find me very understanding, never raising my voice. I identify faults and then constructively rectify them making allowance for your level of experience and giving praise for your achievements.
Your confidence is my priority and I will go to great lengths to keep it intact so you progress quicker and feel good about your driving.

The Learner Car
The car I drive is a Vauxhall Astra 1.4 (new model).
It's a medium sized car with medium sized engine, has all top of the range refinements including:
- Air conditioning
- Power steering
- Electric windows and door mirrors
- Anti locking brakes
- Nice easy clutch
Its a smooth, comfortable car to drive and has dual controls for your safety in case you need my quick reactions to get you out of trouble.

Cost of Driving Lessons
The cost of my lessons is:
| 1 hour | £20.00 |
| 1½ hours | £30.00 |
| 2 hours | £40.00 |
| Block of 10 hours or more | £18.50 per hour |
Beware of cut price driving lessons from new inexperienced instructors struggling for work, some on trainee licences.
You can save short term with them but could pay much more long term if you get poor instruction, with many unnecessary extra lessons needed and less chance of reaching test standard, and less chance of passing.
